Isle of Man Space Industry

In September 2010, when a space industry analyst suggested that the Isle of Man was the 5th most likely nation to put the next person on the moon, many ill informed observers considered the statement something of a joke. However recent market research has named the Isle of Man and its attitude to the space industry as a "fascinating model" and one on which other nations should base their own models.  This is high praise indeed and not undeserved.  This is clearly demonstrated with four of the ten leading satellite companies in the World now have operations on the Isle of Man and there are twelve space firms now based here, as well as two ex Soviet 30 metre long space stations!

It was further demonstrated in October 2011 when the Via-Sat-1 satellite was launched into space representing the first Isle of Man licensed orbital filing slot.  The satellite, which has the highest capacity in the World was successfully launched into a geostationary orbit over the Equator and provides new internet services to Canada and the USA.      

The conditions for the promotion of the Isle of Man space industry have been shaped by the Isle of Man Government and the favourable conditions for businesses that the Island offers including:

  • 0% corporation tax on companies' profits;
  • the filing with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for select orbital slots and associated radio frequencies;
  • a long established finance industry providing a network of banks, lawyers, accountants, tax advisors and other professional support;
  • generous government incentives and grants for new businesses; and
  • a stable and encouraging Government keen to develop the space industry base from the Island.
